Former NFL running back Rudi Johnson has died at the age of 45 in Florida with authorities confirming his death as suicide. According to family sources Johnson had been struggling with mental health challenges and the possible effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy CTE a brain condition linked to repeated head trauma.
Born in Petersburg Virginia Johnson began playing football at just six years old. He went on to star at Auburn University where he earned SEC Player of the Year honors before being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft.
Johnson became a key player for the Bengals rushing for nearly 6000 yards and 49 touchdowns across his career. He spent seven seasons in Cincinnati before joining the Detroit Lions in 2008 for his final NFL season.
Beyond football Johnson established the Rudi Johnson Foundation dedicated to supporting children and families in need. Friends and former teammates described him as a devoted family man and community leader.
