Youth-led protests in Morocco have intensified ahead of King Mohammed VI’s national address. Demonstrators urge action on corruption and failed public services as frustration grows nationwide.
Young protesters across Morocco returned to the streets demanding reforms and the dismissal of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. The Gen Z 212 movement organized rallies in Tangiers Casablanca and Rabat urging King Mohammed VI to lead change and save public institutions.
The protests erupted after the deaths of eight pregnant women at a hospital in Agadir. Demonstrators accuse the government of neglecting health and education while spending heavily on projects like stadiums for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. At least three people have been killed in recent clashes.
Gen Z 212 has mobilized thousands through social platforms such as TikTok and Discord. The group called on the king to dismiss corrupt officials release political prisoners and hold a national forum against corruption. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested since late September.
Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said the administration is open to dialogue and accelerating healthcare projects. Rights groups however criticized the crackdown on demonstrators calling it excessive and contrary to promises of reform.
