Fighting has intensified in the Russia-Ukraine war as both sides traded attacks across multiple fronts while leaders called for renewed peace efforts. Russia claimed major territorial gains while Ukraine reported severe damage to its energy infrastructure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow’s forces have captured 5000 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory this year. Russia claimed control of Novovasylivka in Zaporizhzhia and Fedorivka in Donetsk. Ukrainian shelling killed three people and injured one in Belgorod. Russia said it destroyed 184 Ukrainian drones and one near Moscow.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said Russian strikes damaged gas infrastructure and Kyiv will increase gas imports by 30 percent. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of using oil tankers for spying. A Ukrainian drone crashed into a nuclear plant tower in Voronezh without damage.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned US plans to send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would be a serious escalation. He said Moscow still believed President Trump wanted peace. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged renewed talks and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni said Russia showed no interest in peace.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland would not hand over a Ukrainian diver accused in the Nord Stream blasts. The EU agreed to limit Russian diplomats’ travel. Ukraine’s reserves stood at 46.5 billion dollars on October 1.
