A deadly Himachal Pradesh landslide struck a bus in Bilaspur district after days of relentless rainfall killing at least 15 people. Rescue teams continue searching for missing passengers as unstable slopes hamper operations.
At least 15 people have died after debris from a massive landslide hit a passenger bus in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district. The incident occurred late on Thursday after several days of heavy monsoon rain that destabilised mountain slopes. Authorities said the bus was carrying around 25 passengers when the landslide struck. Nine men four women and two children were among those killed while three injured children were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.
Rescue workers and police have continued operations despite rain making the terrain unstable. Footage from the site showed the bus crushed under thick layers of mud and rocks. Excavators and rescue teams were seen clearing debris while volunteers searched for personal belongings buried in the landslide. Officials said continuous rain since Monday has made conditions dangerous and slowed recovery efforts.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Local authorities urged residents to avoid travelling in hilly regions until conditions stabilise.
This tragedy comes amid widespread monsoon destruction across South Asia. Flash floods and mudslides have hit neighbouring Uttarakhand and Nepal leaving dozens dead. Experts say human-driven climate change is intensifying monsoon rains across the region leading to more frequent and severe landslides.
