Sanae Takaichi has been elected leader of the Liberal Democratic Party and is set to become Japan First Female Prime Minister if confirmed by parliament on October 15. Her victory marks a historic moment for Japan as she defeated Shinjiro Koizumi in a decisive run off.
Takaichi 64 represents the traditional wing of the LDP and combines economic stimulus with conservative social policies. She has pledged stricter immigration controls and a stronger defence stance. Analysts say her leadership will be tested by Japan’s ageing population, fragile economy and rising regional tensions.
The LDP no longer holds majorities in both chambers meaning Takaichi must rely on coalition partners and opposition cooperation to govern effectively. Critics argue she shows little interest in women’s rights or gender equality while supporters highlight her experience and stability.
If confirmed her first diplomatic challenge may come at an October summit with US President Donald Trump where defence spending could dominate talks.
