Gaza Mikeno Reaches Gaza marking a breakthrough for the Global Sumud Flotilla after more than 20 Israeli interceptions. The Greek flagged vessel entered Palestinian waters carrying humanitarian aid and activists from around the world.
The flotilla said that 223 participants have been detained by Israeli forces. However one vessel managed to break through and reach Gaza. Organizers confirmed that 20 vessels were attacked while 24 others continue their mission.
The Mikeno’s entry is seen as a major symbolic moment in the effort to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. Activists described it as a breach in the wall of siege. Human rights observers warned that Israel’s actions in international waters amount to violations of maritime law.
The convoy which set sail in late August included over 50 ships and more than 500 civilians from 45 countries. Its cargo consists of food medicine and medical equipment urgently needed in Gaza.
Since October 2023 Israeli bombardment has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians most of them women and children. The blockade has left nearly two million displaced and forced into dire conditions.
The Mikeno’s success has sparked celebration among solidarity groups. Pro Palestinian activists are urging international protection for the flotilla and safe passage for remaining ships.
