President Nelson a man of faith vision and compassion has passed away at the age of 101. The beloved leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints died peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City making history as the church’s oldest prophet president.
During his more than seven years as the church’s 17th president President Nelson transformed the faith with bold leadership and sweeping changes. He guided members through the COVID 19 pandemic with hope restructured worship services strengthened ministering and accelerated temple construction on an unprecedented scale. When he was born only six temples operated worldwide. By the time of his passing he had announced 200 more ensuring future generations would benefit from his vision.
President Nelson’s ministry was deeply personal and global at once. He traveled to more than 130 countries dedicated 31 nations for the preaching of the gospel and expanded humanitarian aid to over 1.3 billion annually. Members cherished his humor warmth and optimism. Even in his late 90s he joked that he had stopped buying green bananas while continuing to inspire millions with his energy and faith.
Beyond his prophetic role President Nelson was a world renowned heart surgeon and medical pioneer. He performed thousands of successful operations helped advance open heart surgery and trained doctors across the globe. Yet he set aside his scalpel to serve as an apostle in 1984 devoting the rest of his life to spiritual healing.
His teachings centered on following Jesus Christ building peace and choosing kindness over contention. In 2023 he was awarded the Gandhi King Mandela Peace Prize for his dedication to unity and peacemaking.
President Nelson is remembered not only as a prophet and visionary but also as a devoted family man. He and his first wife Dantzel raised 10 children together before her passing in 2005. Later he married Wendy Watson Nelson who supported him through his later ministry years. He leaves behind a vast posterity of children grandchildren great grandchildren and even a great great grandchild.
With his passing President Nelson’s legacy endures as one of faith progress and love for people everywhere. His words of hope and vision will continue to inspire millions of Latter day Saints and countless others around the world.
