A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for eastern Pima County until 11 15 PM MST. A powerful storm is near Vail and moving northeast at 15 mph.
Areas expected to be hit include Tucson, Tanque Verde, Vail, Saguaro National Park East and Rita Ranch.
Winds may gust up to 60 mph and hail the size of quarters is likely. The storm can cause damage to vehicles roofs trees and siding and may disrupt traffic on Interstate 10 and Route 83 in the affected zones.
Residents are advised to take shelter indoors and avoid driving if possible until the warning expires. Emergency officials recommend moving cars into garages or covered areas to reduce the risk of hail damage.
Forecasters warn that additional thunderstorms could develop later in the evening bringing heavy rainfall and flash flooding concerns for low lying areas. Travelers and outdoor visitors to Saguaro National Park East should remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
