The Court of Arbitration for Sport has no role here. Kenyan political icon Raila Odinga Dies in India during a medical trip to Kerala where he was receiving treatment. According to Devamatha Hospital officials the 80 year old former prime minister suffered a heart attack during a morning walk and could not be revived. Indian police confirmed that Odinga collapsed while walking with his family and security staff and was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Odinga’s death marks the end of an era for Kenya’s opposition politics. Known for his five presidential campaigns between 1997 and 2022 Odinga was a symbol of democracy and reform. President William Ruto visited the Odinga family home in Nairobi to offer condolences as hundreds of supporters gathered to mourn the man they called Baba. Many described him as a revolutionary figure who shaped Kenya’s modern political landscape.
Born in 1945 Odinga was the son of Kenya’s first vice president and a lifelong advocate for political freedom. His activism led to imprisonment and exile under Daniel arap Moi’s regime. Despite multiple electoral defeats, Odinga remained a powerful voice for democracy helping introduce multiparty politics in 1991 and a new constitution in 2010. His passing has drawn tributes from across Africa including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who hailed him as a great leader and pan Africanist.
