China has accused the United States of double standards after President Donald Trump warned of a 100 percent tariff on Chinese products. The statement came as Beijing introduced new export controls on rare earth minerals in retaliation to Washington’s restrictions on Chinese entities and technology industries. The trade tension comes ahead of a potential Trump and Xi Jinping meeting expected later this month.
On October 9 China expanded export rules to cover twelve rare earth metals and refining equipment effective December 1. The government said these China Trade Measures are based on national security concerns. Foreign companies will now require Beijing’s approval to export products containing rare earths and must declare their intended use. Experts suggest the move is strategic positioning before trade talks between the two leaders.
In response Trump announced a 100 percent tariff effective from November 1 calling China’s actions trade hostility. He also hinted at canceling his meeting with Xi and threatened further export controls on technology. China replied by calling the move discriminatory and warned that it would take countermeasures if the tariffs proceed. The escalating dispute has renewed fears of a global trade war.
