Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has reported to Swedish officials that she is being detained under harsh conditions in Israel after her arrest during the Global Sumud Flotilla mission to deliver aid to Gaza.Thunberg said she was kept in a cell infested with bedbugs and received very little food and water. She also described sitting for long periods on hard surfaces and developing rashes.
Another detainee said Thunberg was forced to hold flags while photographs were taken. The identity of the flags is unknown.Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla which included over forty boats and arrested all crew members. Most of the activists are being held at a high security prison in the Negev desert.
Lawyers from the NGO Adalah said that the rights of detainees were violated. Activists were denied access to water sanitation medication and immediate legal representation. The flotilla legal team confirmed that detainees were left for hours without food or water with only a packet of crisps given to Thunberg.
This is the second time Thunberg has been arrested during a flotilla mission. She has access to legal counsel and has refused to sign documents she does not understand. The case has drawn global attention and raised concerns about human rights treatment for activists attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.
