Jakarta Indonesia At least 91 people are believed to be trapped under rubble after the Indonesia School Collapse at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo East Java. Authorities confirmed that six survivors remain alive under the debris and are in contact with rescue teams nearly two days after the disaster.
The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) revised its earlier estimate of 38 trapped victims to more than 90 late Tuesday. Rescue efforts are being carried out manually by digging holes and openings to evacuate survivors. BNPB warned that heavy machinery could trigger further collapse.
According to officials rescuers managed to deliver food and water to six people showing signs of life under one section of the rubble. So far the death toll stands at three with nearly 100 others injured. Of the injured 70 have been discharged while 26 remain in hospital. More than 300 rescue workers from BNPB the military and national police have been deployed to the scene. The collapse occurred on Monday afternoon as students mostly teenage boys and staff were gathered for prayers.
Authorities suspect the school’s foundational pillars gave way due to unauthorized construction work on an upper floor. BNPB noted that if no more survivors are found the next phase will involve the use of heavy equipment to recover deceased victims still trapped. The tragedy has sparked concerns about construction safety standards in the country. Grieving families and volunteers continue to wait for updates at the site.
